In Star Trek The Motion Picture the writers who contibuted ideas or draft scripts included Gene Roddenberry, Harlan Ellison, Ray Bradbury, Theodore Sturgeon, and director Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff). Michael Cimino (The Deerhunter) and Steven Bochco were also solicited, but declined to participate.
